Guy Ritchie’s new film is expected to be one of Warner Bros. biggest flops
After been delayed several times King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is finally in theaters, but its debut is anticipating an epic flop for Warner Bros: starting from a $175 million production budget, Guy Ritchie’s new film about the mythical king is projected to make $25 million from over 3,600 locations.
Ritchie’s expensive new film is far from the success of his 2009’s Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel A Game of Shadows, which almost doubled the original budgets with the box office takings. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword has been strongly criticized (receiving only 23% rate on Rotten Tomatoes) and part of the blame was inevitably poured on Charlie Hunnam, best known for his role in the TV series Sons of Anarchy.
The english actor, who starred in Cold Mountain and Pacific Rim, is still considered a “rising star” who has to overcome some more big screen tests to conquer the critics.
Hunnam’s next projects include Papillon, an upcoming film directed by Michael Noer: it is a remake of the 1973 film of the same name, written by Dalton Trumbo, starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. Papillon is based on the autobiography by the french convict Henri Charrière.
Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur also stars Jude Law, Eric Bana, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou and Aidan Gillen, but it looks like the famous and talented cast won’t be sufficient to save the film from the collapse.
Meanwhile, the new chapter of Guardians of the Galaxy continues to rule the box office and is expected to make over $60 million during its second week of release. This is also the weekend debut of Snatched, the R-rated comedy starring Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn, who’s returning to cinema after a 15 years hiatus: the film is not expected to be a huge success, but it would probably take away some potential viewers from King Arthur.
