Bong Joon-ho’s film gets multiple awards beating ‘Joker’ in three categories: see full list of winners
South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho makes history at the 92nd Academy Awards, by winning 4 Oscars for his film Parasite. It is a record for a non-english-language film. Parasite prevailed over Joker, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood in the category Best Picture and got 3 more awards for Directing, International Feature Film and Original Screenplay. In spite of the nominations, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman didn’t get any awards, while Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and Todd Phillips’ Joker won two Oscars apiece.
When accepting the award for Directing, Bong Joon-ho gave a touching speech about Scorsese, also mentioning the other filmmakers who were nominated in the same category: «When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart which is “The most personal is the most creative.” That quote was from our great Martin Scorsese. When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese’s films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor.» he said. «When people in the US were not familiar with my film, Quentin always put my films on his list. He’s here. Thank you so much. Quentin, I love you. And Todd and Sam, great directors that I admire, if the Academy allows, I would like to get a Texas Chainsaw, split the Oscar trophy into five, and share it with all of you. I will drink until next morning. Thank you.»
2020’s Oscar winners include actors Brad Pitt, Laura Dern, Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger.
The Academy Awards ceremony was held on Sunday, February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and aired live on ABC and was televised in more than 225 countries worldwide. The show included live music performances by Janelle Monae, Billie Eilish, Idina Menzel, Elton John and Eminem.
