The Nosey Snake

Skin announces the release of her autobiography

The book will be out in September

Skin has just announced the release of her autobiography, retracing her rise to fame with the English rock band, Skunk Anansie.

The book, called It Takes Blood and Guts, is a collaboration between the singer-songwriter and former NME journalist Lucy O’Brien.

An official synopsis suggests that It Takes Blood and Guts won’t be only the chronicle of Skin’s career, but it’s going to stress her life path as a woman: from her difficult childhood in Brixton to forming Skunk Anansie in the 90s, from headlining Glastonbury in 1999 to the thoughts on her solo career and her personal life. It’s going to be the story of a black woman in rock and a LGBTQ+ activist that soon became a powerful female icon.

Skin’s quote on the back cover gives an idea of the spirit of the book: It’s been a very difficult thing being a lead singer of a rock band looking like me and it still is. I have to say it’s been a fight and it will always be a fight. That fight drives you and makes you want to work harder . It’s not supposed to be easy, particularly if you’re a woman, you’re black or you are gay like me. You’ve got to keep moving forward, keep striving for everything you want to be. It’s been a fight, and there has been a personal cost, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

It Takes Blood and Guts will be out on September 24, 2020.
